Sanctions have since long posed difficulties, and sometimes even impediments, to the recognition and enforcement of awards. This issue has become increasingly prevalent in recent years due to the growing number of sanctions adopted by States and international organisations. Although certain legal issues arising from the interaction between sanctions and arbitration remain unsettled, sanctions do not present an insurmountable obstacle to the recognition and enforcement of awards. The discussion will identify the practical and legal challenges involved and explore concrete ways to address them.
