About us
With 15 lawyers fully dedicated to international arbitration, Liedekerke’s practice is the largest team in Belgium acting as counsel in arbitration proceedings and arbitration-related court proceedings. With a truly global expertise extending in particular to francophone Africa and to the Middle East, the practice is also at the forefront of arbitration-related court proceedings (enforcement and setting-aside) in Belgium and France.
Liedekerke’s International Arbitration Practice focuses on high-stakes international arbitration proceedings in commercial and investment disputes world-wide assisting clients in ad hoc proceedings or under the rules of all major institutions (including ICC, LCIA, SIAC, ICSID, OHADA, SCAI, and CEPANI rules).
The practice also assists clients in the organisation and coordination of multi-jurisdiction claims and defense strategies.
Our team is particularly active in international disputes related to distribution, mining, engineering and construction, energy, corporate/M&A, and banking. We represent national, foreign and multinational companies or State-owned entities active in these sectors, especially in Europe, the Middle East and francophone Africa, in international arbitration proceedings governed by a wide range of applicable laws – from both the civil and the common law traditions – and before State courts. The team also represents States or investors in international investment arbitrations and before State courts.
The breadth of our experience in international arbitration and arbitration-related court proceedings, is unparalleled in Belgium. Liedekerke is one of the only two Belgian law firms featured in the GAR100, the Global Arbitration Review’s ranking of law firms specialised in international arbitration.

The African continent has been drawing fast-growing international attention from foreign companies all around the world for more than a decade, with a marked interest from the neighbouring Middle East in recent years. All industries are concerned, from construction, energy, mining, to pharma, IT, real estate and finance.\r\n
\r\n Penetrating a foreign market, however, presents considerable challenges. Whether the new venture takes the form of commercial contracts or foreign direct investments, a good grasp of the local landscape is key to ensure business success.\r\n
\r\n In this event, a panel composed of in-house counsel and arbitral institutions’ representatives will discuss the role that arbitration and arbitration practitioners can play in providing stability and security to new business endeavours in Africa. The panellists will also share their knowledge and experiences of entering the market of various countries in Africa, and provide their insights on how the arbitration community can do better when assisting their clients with new business ventures. \r\n
\r\n The panel will be moderated by Aimery de Schoutheete, partner in Liedekerke’s International Arbitration practice and founder of the Kinshasa (DRC) and Kigali (Rwanda) offices of the Firm. \r\n
