Curtis' international arbitration cases have included many of the world’s best-known arbitrations and over US$150 billion in claims. We handle international investment disputes under all the major international arbitration rules, including ICSID, ICC, AAA, LCIA and SCC rules as well as ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules. The team also has an excellent track record in the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards in the UK commercial courts and U.S. federal courts.
EXCELLENCE IN INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION
Curtis has been recognized as the No. 1 law firm in the world for high-stakes international arbitration by the American Lawyer, a figure that is based on the number of international arbitration cases handled involving more than US$1 billion in dispute. The firm has for many years been a top firm by number of sovereign representations at ICSID and remains so today. Curtis is also ranked as a top firm overall by Global Arbitration Review.
The range of services provided by the group includes: drafting arbitration clauses; handling pre-arbitration negotiations; and representing clients before arbitral tribunals and in connection with court proceedings relating to provisional remedies as well as recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.
TOP FIRM REPRESENTING SOVEREIGN STATES IN INVESTOR-STATE ARBITRATIONS
Curtis is the leading firm in representing sovereign states as respondents in ICSID arbitrations. Described as a "a knight in shining armour for governments facing serious claims under investment treaties" by Global Arbitration Review, we have defended over 40 states. We follow a policy of exclusively representing states in investor-state arbitrations to avoid the issue conflicts that may arise by representing both investors and states simultaneously.
HIGHLY RANKED INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION ATTORNEYS
The group is composed of leading international arbitration lawyers spanning all offices of the firm. It is highly integrated, allowing staffing of international arbitration cases across offices. Many of our practitioners are recognized for their expertise and ranked by legal directories and awards organizations, including Global Arbitration Review, Chambers, Legal 500 and Who's Who Legal, across Latin America, Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia. Members of the group have authored widely-recognized articles on international arbitration and are frequently invited to deliver keynote addresses or appear as panelists at international conferences.

The team also has an excellent track record in the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards in the UK commercial courts and U.S. federal courts.\r\n\r\nEXCELLENCE IN INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION\r\n\r\nCurtis has been recognized as the No. 1 law firm in the world for high-stakes international arbitration by the American Lawyer, a figure that is based on the number of international arbitration cases handled involving more than US$1 billion in dispute. The firm has for many years been a top firm by number of sovereign representations at ICSID and remains so today. Curtis is also ranked as a top firm overall by Global Arbitration Review.\r\n\r\nThe range of services provided by the group includes: drafting arbitration clauses; handling pre-arbitration negotiations; and representing clients before arbitral tribunals and in connection with court proceedings relating to provisional remedies as well as recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.\r\n\r\nTOP FIRM REPRESENTING SOVEREIGN STATES IN INVESTOR-STATE ARBITRATIONS\r\n\r\nCurtis is the leading firm in representing sovereign states as respondents in ICSID arbitrations. Described as a "a knight in shining armour for governments facing serious claims under investment treaties" by Global Arbitration Review, we have defended over 40 states. We follow a policy of exclusively representing states in investor-state arbitrations to avoid the issue conflicts that may arise by representing both investors and states simultaneously.\r\n\r\nHIGHLY RANKED INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION ATTORNEYS\r\n\r\nThe group is composed of leading international arbitration lawyers spanning all offices of the firm.

Join us for a panel discussion on “Navigating Privilege Challenges in International Arbitration,” featuring experts and practitioners from diverse legal backgrounds. We will explore the complex landscape of legal privilege across jurisdictions, addressing the contrasts between common law and civil law approaches, and the particular challenges faced by States and in-house counsel. Our panelists will share insights on choice-of-law considerations, recent decisions, and practical strategies for protecting privileged materials in cross-border disputes. From establishing privilege protocols at the outset of arbitration to managing the impact of remote work and evolving technologies, the webinar will offer essential guidance for practitioners seeking to navigate the increasingly complex intersection of privilege, data protection, and international arbitration. \r\n\r\nSpeakers:\r\n- Joe Neuhaus, Neuhaus Arbitration\r\n- Mariana Lozza, National Director, National Directorate of International Affairs and Disputes, Argentine Treasury Attorney General’s Office\r\n-Gaia Morelli, Counsel, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP \r\n\r\nModerator: \r\n- Claudia Frutos-Peterson, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP

Early this year, an inter-State body established under the United States and Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement issued a decision setting forth the United States’ and Colombia’s joint interpretation of a number of important and repeatedly litigated provisions in investment treaties. This joint interpretation is one of just a handful of such joint interpretive statements that States, acting as “masters of their treaties,” have concluded with respect to their international investment agreements, whether doing so pursuant to provisions in those treaties (as was the case for the US-Colombia statement), or in accordance with Article 31(3)(a) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. Such interpretations can reduce the ambiguity about treaty provisions, helping both investors and State Parties avoid wasting vast sums of money on legal disputes about a given agreement’s meaning, and better ensuring that States are able to avoid being subject to improper interpretations of their treaty obligations. However, this most recent joint interpretation, like other joint interpretations that States have concluded, has been subject to criticism and efforts to undermine its effectiveness (see, e.g., here and here). \r\n\r\nAs part of Paris Arbitration Week, Curtis is organizing a panel to identify and unpack the critiques that have been levelled at joint interpretive statements, and explore both the practical barriers impeding more widespread use of these tools by States and possible ways of overcoming those barriers. \r\n\r\nFollowing the panel discussion, the audience will have an opportunity to meet the speakers virtually and continue the conversation in an open Zoom room.

International trade restrictions and economic sanctions have probably become the most discussed topic of 2022, as they give rise to a plethora of legal and practical issues the arbitration community is yet to grapple with. It is yet to be seen how arbitral tribunals involved in hearing disputes with a sanctions element will deal with the sanctions regulations themselves. The interaction between the universe of sanctions and arbitration remains unclear to say the least. Sanctions are adopted at the European Union level and, as such, form part of EU law. In that context, what would be the implications for arbitral tribunals if, for instance, the parties to a dispute disagree on the interpretation and scope of sanctions which find themselves at the heart of a dispute? Do arbitral tribunals have the authority to assess and decide on such issues? Are preliminary rulings on such matters warranted from the Court of Justice of the European Union? And what sort of enforcement hurdles would parties be facing in that context and how could these be mitigated?\r\n\r\nIn this webinar, we will be joined by experienced arbitration and sanctions practitioners as well as representatives from the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union who will share their unique thoughts on how to navigate these challenges.\r\n\r\nFollowing the panel discussion, the audience will have an opportunity to meet the speakers virtually and continue the conversation in an open Zoom room.\r\n\r\nModerator: Geoffroy Lyonnet, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle (Paris)\r\n\r\nSpeakers:\r\n• Elena Klonitskaya, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle (Brussels)\r\n• Nicolaj Kuplewatzky, Référendaire at Court of Justice of the European Union\r\n• Dr Konstantina Georgaki, European Commission, Policy Officer (Capital movements)\r\n• Sebastiano Nessi, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle (Geneva)\r\n\r\nModerator of the Zoom Q&A chat: Valeriya Grebenkova, Associate, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle
