Al-Karim MAKHANI

Al-Karim is a Vice-President at TransPerfect Legal, a US-based global leader in legal technology and support. Their services include data management and data review, legal translations and transcriptions, all of which incorporate AI technology.

Having joined TransPerfect Legal 9 years ago, he leads the UK, EMEA and APAC divisions, which have shown significant growth under his leadership. Today, TransPerfect Legal's teams from non-US divisions provide technology-based legal support services in hundreds of complex, high profile, cross-border litigation and arbitration disputes. They are involved in over half of The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2023, 2024 and 2025, as well as cases handled by law firms ranked in Chambers Band 1 in the UK and APAC.

This makes Al-Karim uniquely placed to have direct knowledge of AI-based legal technology and how this technology has been evolving. He also has a wealth of practical experience of this technology being implemented in the management of disputes, including the challenges this involves.

Prior to moving into the legal technology space, Al-Karim practiced as a senior disputes lawyer at Stephenson Harwood.

Al-Karim regularly advises leading arbitration institutions including the ICC, IBA and AIJA. He has lectured at various UK academic institutions. Al-Karim has published extensively on various aspects of technological advances in dispute management. Al-Karim was an advisor on lawtech issues to the UK Ministry of Justice and DTI's delegation to the US as part of the ‘Great Legal Futures’ Summit in 2022.
