María Angélica Burgos, Partner at Burgos Dispute Resolution, based in Bogota, Colombia.
In 2023, María Angélica founded Burgos Dispute Resolution, pivoting on her practice of more than 15 years in international and domestic arbitration and public international law and business and human rights, both in private and public practice.
María Angélica has experience in international institutional and ad hoc arbitrations under the rules of the ICC, ICSID, UNCITRAL, CIAM and the Court of Arbitration of Madrid, among others. She has also represented clients in proceedings of recognition and enforcement and annulment of awards before the Colombian Supreme Court of Justice.
María Angélica has experience in disputes related to construction projects, distribution and commercial agency relationships, corporate and M&A disputes. She has advised companies on the content and application of international investment agreements (IIAs), as well as in potential claims against foreign governments. She has provided legal counsel to international organizations and states concerning matters of public international law related to jurisdictional immunities.
María Angélica has also significant experience acting as sole arbitrator and tribunal secretary in international arbitrations.
Before founding Burgos Dispute Resolution, María Angélica worked as a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution practice of Baker McKenzie, as Partner at Zuleta Abogados Asociados and as Senior Associate with Gómez-Pinzón Zuleta Abogados. She was also an advisor to the Government Colombia and as such participated in the negotiation of international investment agreements and in the design and implementation of an investment dispute preparedness strategy. Additionally, María Angélica was a University Trainee at the International Court of Justice.
María Angélica obtained her law degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota and has an LL.M in International Business Regulation, Litigation and Arbitration from New York University. She participated in the first edition of the ICC Advanced Arbitration Academy for Latin America.
María Angélica is a Colombian national and is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
