Martina Polasek is Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). A dual Czech and Swedish citizen, she has a substantial background in investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS). Ms. Polasek joined ICSID in 2001 as Legal Counsel and was promoted to Senior Counsel/Team Leader in 2012. She served as Secretary of Tribunals in many arbitrations under the ICSID Convention, the ICSID Additional Facility Rules and the UNCITRAL Rules. She also acted as ad hoc Committee secretary in numerous annulment proceedings. She is recognized by arbitrators, parties and counsel for her expertise in ICSID process. Ms. Polasek was elected Deputy Secretary-General of ICSID in 2016 and was elected Secretary-General of ICSID in 2024.
Ms. Polasek speaks and publishes frequently on international investment law and ISDS procedure. She is currently a Co-Editor-in-Chief of the ICSID Review-Foreign Investment Law Journal. Ms. Polasek holds degrees from George Washington University Law School (LL.M), University of Paris V Descartes (D.E.S.S.) and University of Gothenburg (Master of Laws). She is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia, United States. She is fluent in Czech, Swedish, French and English.
