Mike MERLO

Mike joined Aon (Bermuda) Ltd. in 2004 as Chief Counsel and Senior Vice President, later becoming Executive Vice President in 2007. By 2011, he also took on roles as Managing Director of Aon Risk Solution’s Casualty Consultation, Advocacy and Claims Resolution Practice, and Special Counsel to Aon Corporation. In 2022, he was promoted to Chief Claims Officer for the U.S. and Bermuda.

As Chief Claims Officer, Mike leads approximately 250 Aon Claims colleagues who provide consulting and advocacy across all lines of business. He continues to offer counsel on a wide spectrum of issues, with a focus on complex casualty matters. Mike has helped secure over $4 billion in insurance recoveries for Aon clients, playing a crucial role in resolving high-profile claims in the domestic, London, and Bermuda insurance markets.

Before joining Aon, Mike practiced complex civil litigation in Chicago, focusing on tort/mass tort defense, insurance, and reinsurance matters. He has evaluated and analyzed various insurance claims including general liability, asbestos, pollution, business interruption, and more. Mike also has government experience, having served as a Legislative Assistant to U.S. Congressman Sydney R. Yates of Illinois.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and has authored articles and spoken at seminars on industry topics. Mike has also served on the boards of Aon Benfield (Bermuda) Ltd and the Association of Bermuda Compliance Officers (ABCO).
