Pierluigi MATERA
Pierluigi Matera – LLB (Hons) (LUISS), PhD (Unisa), is a corporate law scholar and attorney with extensive experience in both U.S. and European company law. His teaching and research focus on comparative law, sports law, and corporate law—with particular emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate litigation, the history of business corporations, and the evolving intersection between artificial intelligence and corporate governance.
Professor Matera has published widely in both peer-reviewed and student-edited journals, including the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law, the Fordham Journal of Corporate and Financial Law, the Journal of Corporation Law, and the Boston University Journal of Science and Technology Law. His short notes and commentary have been featured on leading law blogs and forums, such as the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance, the Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog, and the Oxford Business Law Blog.
He holds a PhD in Comparative Law and is Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Rome-LCU, where he previously served as Dean of the Law School.
He teaches Corporations as well as M&A in the JD program at Boston University Law School—where he also teaches Corporations in the LLM program in American Law.
Additionally, he holds the position of Professor of Law and Economics – Business and Corporate Law at Rome-LUISS, and is a visiting fellow and life member of Wolfson College, Cambridge. From 2010 to 2025, he served as Executive Director of IDEMS, the Centre for Research in Sports Law and Management.
Professor Matera is a member of the board of the Arbitration Chamber of the Rome Bar Association, a bankruptcy trustee, and previously served as Special Commissioner of the Italian Civil Aviation Agency (AeCI) and several other companies.
Since July 2023, he has been one of the four experts appointed to the Safeguarding Office of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI). He previously served as Deputy Prosecutor General of CONI, as President of the Safeguarding Offices of both the Italian Gymnastics Federation and the Italian Dancesport Federation, as Vice Special Commissioner of the Italian Hockey Federation (FIH) (2014), and as Commissioner ad acta for more than 35 Federations (since 2014), as well as Chair of General Meetings (since 2016).
At CONI, between 2013 and 2015, he served as a member of the Committee for Sports Justice Reform. In this capacity, he drafted the Code for Sports Justice, which has been in force in Italy since 2014. Between 2017 and 2021, he served on other committees tasked with reforming sports law and contributed to drafting CONI’s Charter and the Principles for Sports Federation Charters and Bylaws, both of which remain in force. In 2025, he was again appointed as a member of the new Committee for Sports Justice Reform, responsible for amending the Code.
He has spoken, chaired, and coordinated sessions and panels at numerous national and international conferences, including the Annual Rome Conference on AI, Ethics, and the Future of Corporate Governance, which he co-chairs alongside David J. Berger.
He is the author of a number of scholarly publications on comparative law and corporate law.
