Jalal (Jil) EL AHDAB
I am a partner in our Dispute Resolution Boutique in Paris, but practice in the US and the EMEA. I'm qualified in Paris, NY and Beirut.
My practice-area is international business law, with a focus on international disputes and foreign investments, notably in Europe, Africa and the MENA region. Having acted as a counsel, arbitrator and expert in over 150 cases, I have in-depth experience in managing complex disputes including shareholders' rights, suits against States, class actions, breach of negotiations and bank guarantees. My sector experience is comprised of work for our high-profile clients in the aerospace, defence and aeronautic industries, as well as in the sectors of energy, commodities trade, telecoms, ports, airports, construction, life sciences, sports and more.
I am also well-versed in settlement strategies and optimization: as an advocate, I have mediation skills (CEDR-trained) enabling me to identify when there is room for an agreement, how to cope with the most sensitive disputes and reach settlement in the most effective, fair and reasonable manner.
In addition to being a regular speaker at international arbitration conferences, I have also authored numerous articles in professional and legal journals and act as managing editor of the International Journal of Arab Arbitration (available on Kluweronline.com). Furthermore, I have co-authored two books: 'Arbitration with the Arab Countries' (published by Kluwer in 2011), and a book on Arbitration Law and Practice in France, written jointly with Professor Daniel Mainguy of the University of Paris 1 – Sorbonne (published by LexisNexis in 2021).
I am a former UNCITRAL representative (2013/2018) and member of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC (2015/2021). I am also vice-chair (Chair from 2017 to 2021) of the European Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and am the co-chair of the IBA Arab Regional Forum. At last, I am a member of the Advisory Board of VIAC (the Vienna International Arbitration Centre) and a member of the Board of the Association Française d'Arbitrage (AFA).
I am qualified to practice in Beirut (Lebanon), Paris (France) and New York (USA), and am equally fluent in Arabic, English and French.

As part of Paris Arbitration Week 2023, Bird & Bird is delighted to welcome you to its conference on ‘Space Disputes: Why is arbitration the next/best frontier?’:\r\n
The event, organized by our partners Jalal El Ahdab and Jean-Claude Vecchiatto, will take place in the Paris office of Bird & Bird at 2 rue de la Chaussée d’Antin, 75009, close to Opéra, and will last for 2.5 hours, starting at 10 AM, or can be followed remotely. A lunch cocktail will follow the session at 12:30 PM.\r\n
With the rise of the private sector in the space industry, panellists will be discussing the need for a new global regime regulating space activity. Counsel, arbitrators and other players from the industry will delve into the legal and financial aspects of investing in the space industry, as well as the current and potential disputes arising in the sector, and how to best settle them: remediation of space debris; which “applicable law” in the “space jurisdiction”; the notion of ownership beyond national frontiers and whether it can apply to other planets, the Moon, and other celestial bodies; financing or securing satellites in the midst of economic sanctions; and the clash between international treaties, national laws and regulations, the laws of war… and more!\r\n
The panel discussion will be moderated by Jalal El Ahdab and Jean-Claude Vecchiatto (partners at Bird & Bird). Guest speakers set out below:\r\n

Prof. Philippe Achilleas is full professor of public law at the University Paris Sud / Paris Saclay. He is the director of the Institute of Space and Telecommunications Law (IDEST), the Master’s Degree in Law of Space Activities and Telecommunications and the International Chair of Space and Telecommunications Law. Philippe Achilleas is also the Director of the scientific consortium established between established between the University Paris Saclay and the French Space Agency.\r\n
- Loïc Amiand, Head of Legal of Airbus Space Systems\r\n
He served as Senior legal counsel for Airbus defence and Space for 5 years. He has an extensive experience in international M&A, international Business law, competition law and contract law.\r\n
